An opinion essay on the role of robotics in the future of work — graded band-by-band by Cuepen's AI examiner. Strong ideas, held to Band 6.0 by a missing thesis, an under-length response, and repeated spelling and article slips.

Question:

What is your opinion on the role of robotics in the future of work? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Robots at work — the benefits and human costs this essay weighs.

Candidate's answer:

In the contemporary era, rapid technological advancements such as artificial intelligence and robotics are revolutionizing the future of work. Whilst, they offer many benefits such as reduced work-load and protection against riskier and hard jobs, robotics has notable drawbacks including lack of human-touch, sense of productivity and belonging. Furthermore, increased usage of robotics and artifical intelligence has detrimental impact on mental and physical health.

To begin with, robotics removes tedious work such as cooking, cleaning, and farming, enabling humans to focus on creative and engaging subjects. In addition, riskier jobs such as mining and deep sea diving can utilize robots to avoid physical harm to humans. Moreover, jobs that require high precision such as performing an operation on humans or cutting objects are heavily benefited through robotics. Robots may also replace teachers in schools by catering to students of different backgrounds and pyschologies, that a teacher cannot perform easily.

Conversely, excessive usage of robots in work can remove a sense of belonging and lead to higher stress levels and depression. Recent research suggests that usage of artifical intelligence in schools leads to drop in students' ability to express feelings and their emotional intelligence. This futher leads to introverted employees who cannot deal with conflict at workplace.

Notwithstanding the benefits of robotics such as alleviating physical work and riskier jobs, employees are prone to less job satisfaction and lack of achievement. Thus, it is important for government authorities to regulate usage of robitics at work.

Task Response feedback (4)

1Unclear position

Whilst, they offer many benefits such as reduced work-load and protection against riskier and hard jobs, robotics has notable drawbacks including lack of human-touch, sense of productivity and belonging.

💡The introduction lists benefits and drawbacks but never states the writer's own opinion, which the prompt explicitly asks for ('What is your opinion…?').

While robotics offers real benefits, I believe its drawbacks mean its use at work should be carefully regulated.

2Underdeveloped idea

Furthermore, increased usage of robotics and artifical intelligence has detrimental impact on mental and physical health.

💡The essay is 6 words under the minimum, and the opinion is its least-developed part; a short paragraph stating and justifying your view would fix both.

Add a body paragraph that argues your position — e.g. that regulation is needed so automation complements workers rather than replacing them.

3Underdeveloped idea

Robots may also replace teachers in schools by catering to students of different backgrounds and pyschologies, that a teacher cannot perform easily.

💡The claim that robots can 'replace teachers' by catering to every student is a sweeping over-generalisation, asserted with no support, and it undercuts the essay's own later point about lost emotional intelligence.

Robots could support teachers — for example, by adapting practice exercises to each student's level — rather than replacing them wholesale.

4Weak conclusion judgement

Thus, it is important for government authorities to regulate usage of robitics at work.

💡The writer's actual opinion — that robotics should be regulated — appears only in this final sentence and is never explained or justified anywhere in the essay.

Because these risks are real, I believe governments should regulate workplace robotics — setting limits that keep humans central to the jobs that need them.

The fastest route to Band 7

  • State your opinion in the introduction and develop it — here it only surfaces in the final sentence, so the essay reads as a list of pros and cons rather than an argument.
  • Reach 250+ words (this lands at 244) by adding a short paragraph that justifies your position.
  • Proofread for spelling ('artificial', 'psychologies', 'further', 'robotics') and add the missing articles ('a detrimental impact', 'a drop', 'the workplace').

Frequently asked questions

How do I raise an opinion essay above Band 6?+

State a clear position in the introduction and support it throughout, write at least 250 words, and proofread carefully for spelling and article errors.
