IELTS Writing Task 2: A Band 6.5 Essay (Should We Keep Traditional Ways of Life?), Graded
An opinion essay on whether traditional ways of life are worth keeping — graded band-by-band by Cuepen's AI examiner. Rich ideas and vocabulary, held to Band 6.5 by a conclusion that contradicts its own thesis and recurring grammar slips.
Question:
With the development of modern society, traditional ways of life are being lost. Is it important to keep our traditional ways of life? Give reasons for your answer. Write at least 250 words.
Candidate's answer:
In the contemporary era, many argue that traditional cultures are outdated and must be replaced by modern ways of living. Whilst modern thinking is beneficial to the society, traditional cultures provide various benefits including creating a sense of belonging, improving our health and developing habits. I strongly believe that we need a balance between traditional culture and the modern way of living.
To begin with, traditional cultures create a sense of community, thereby enhancing a sense of belonging. Moreover, many traditional cultures have scientific backing and inculcate good habits in our communities such as long-term health benefits by fasting, meditating or performing prayers early in the morning to clear our minds, and donating food and clothing on special occasions to the poor to practice humility and equality. In addition, traditional cultures associated with festivals such as cleaning homes, respecting the elderly and the ancestors, and pilgrimage walks are known to reduce stress levels and improve our physical and mental health.
Conversely, some traditional cultures may be harmful to physical health such as using excessive incense, believing in negative effects of seeing a cat before an event, and not traveling during specific hours and days. Consequently, these lead people to believe in baseless practices without scientific evidence, thereby psychologically impacting them. A pertinent example of the same is to not donate money on Fridays in Hindu culture, since it's falsely believed to reduce donor's wealth and prosperity.
Notwithstanding the benefits of traditional culture, few drawbacks that create divide between people outweigh the benefits of them. Thus, it is important to maintain a balance between traditional practices and the modern way of living. Schools must educate students about the benefits and drawbacks of traditional culture and strive to inculcate good practices from childhood.

I strongly believe that we need a balance between traditional culture and the modern way of living.
💡The thesis settles on a vague 'balance' rather than answering the question directly — is it important to keep traditional ways of life? — and never says which traditions are worth preserving.
I believe the traditions that bring genuine benefits are worth preserving, even as we adopt modern ways of living.
To begin with, traditional cultures create a sense of community, thereby enhancing a sense of belonging.
💡The 'sense of belonging' point is asserted twice in one sentence but never illustrated with an example, unlike the health points that follow.
For instance, shared festivals bring neighbours together year after year, giving people a sense of roots and belonging.
Notwithstanding the benefits of traditional culture, few drawbacks that create divide between people outweigh the benefits of them.
💡This concluding judgement contradicts the essay: it says the drawbacks 'outweigh the benefits', yet the thesis and the next sentence call for a balance and the whole body argues tradition is valuable.
Although a few harmful customs create division, the benefits of tradition outweigh them, so the worthwhile practices should be kept.
The fastest route to Band 7.5
- Make the conclusion agree with the thesis — here it says the drawbacks "outweigh the benefits" right after arguing for a balance, which reverses your position.
- Split the two 50-word list sentences — one idea per sentence keeps the argument clear and fixes the mismatched "such as" lists.
- Watch the articles ('beneficial to society', 'create a divide', 'the donor's wealth') — the small slips add up across the essay.

Why is it only Band 6.5?+
The conclusion states the drawbacks "outweigh the benefits", which contradicts the "balance" thesis, and there are recurring article errors and two overloaded run-on sentences.

State your view in the introduction, support it consistently in every body paragraph, and make sure the conclusion restates the same position rather than reversing it.
